Welcome to Belper Bridge Club
MOSS TROPHY 2025-26
MOSS TROPHY 2025-26

2025-26 MOSS TROPHY –TEAMS OF FOUR

Played on the 4th Friday in each month. All is set for the first round 25th April.

NB Just to be clear the bridge on that afternoon will be open to all, whether involved in the trophy or not. Guests welcome. It will look like any other Friday to those not involved.

We now have 9 Teams of 4. One pair to play North South on the Moss Trophy afternoons and the other East West.

Teams should pick a colour (first come first served) and it is suggested you might all want to wear some item of apparel in the relevant colour (very much optional)

Participating and non participating pairs play as normal. In addition to the normal scoring the teams will score as follows

For each pair you beat in your orientation you get 2 points (1 for any equal) Points for the N/S and E/W pairs will be aggregated and a League table of the teams will be created.

Eg If there are 8 tables and N/S pair come 2nd and E/W come 4th 20 points would be scored.

Obviously not all teams will be able to play on every 4th Friday. Scores will be aggregated and once 5 events have been played, the worst aggregate score can be dropped off. Teams playing less than 5 times will not qualify.

The more you play the better your chances. Teams can be added through the year but will be at an automatic disadvantage.

We hope this will be a fun addition to our other events and should not be taken too seriously.

HAND OF THE WEEK

I was faced with this extraordinary North hand.

Lets just say we had a mix up and ended up in 6NT.

Congratulations to the 2 pairs who identfied that it must be a grand slam.

Jim and Jenny settled for a very respectable 7 Diamonds.

Tom and Gill, starting their quest for a second Slam Master title, went for 7NT.

What happened at your table?

philip@thompsonsonline.net

This was the first hand of the afternoon for us, so I was N and not yet in bridge mode. What a hand, 2 losers, what was my opening bid to be?
2C, I thought I was too strong for this, showing 23/24 points, Jenny would have bid 2D relay, I’d have then gone to 3D and probably stopped there, or perhaps 2NT, or 3NT, Jenny might have bid 4C stayman, but what then?
I thought of making 4NT my opening bid, asking for Aces, which would then have taken me to certainly 6NT, but Jenny might have been confused
So in the end I opted for 3NT, hoping it wouldn’t be confused with Gambling 3NT, which I don’t  think Jenny recognises, but the bidding stopped there.
What did others bid, and why, not that it matters as a wonderful hand like that isn’t likely to come my way for a long time!
Cheers
Peter
