CLUB PRESIDENT - JOHN LITTLE

It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Club President John Little passed away on Friday morning, 23rd May 2025. John was a lovely man who enjoyed his Bridge and who served the club in many roles over many years, including auditing the accounts until a year ago. He was always polite and a pleasure to play with and against. He will be sadly missed.
Memories of John
In memory of a dear friend and partner.
I was deeply saddened by the news that John Little has passed away. He was my bridge partner for many years at a number of bridge clubs and he was a pleasure to play both with and against. He was always kind and considerate at the bridge table and put up with my often erratic bidding and play without a word of criticism! Praise was frequently forthcoming both to his partners and the opposition – he was a perfect gentleman.
Of course there was the occasional absence from bridge when John’s great passion intervened – I’m not sure the salmon would agree!
He was a loyal servant to Bishop Auckland Bridge Club and met with considerable success at the bridge table winning both the Walker Trophy and the Carpenter Cup. He also achieved a remarkable result nationally when he was first in a National Simultaneous Pairs event with a total of 67.53%. Notoriety was achieved when a photograph of the winning pair appeared in the E.B.U. English Bridge magazine!
He played for the Club in the Inter-Club League for a number of years and served as Chairman for two periods where he handled the running of the bridge club with his usual efficiency and diplomacy. It was a well deserved honour when he was made President of our Bridge Club. John could always be relied upon to give his full backing to the Bridge Club.
Above all else he was a dear friend and we will all miss him.

Fouled Board |
Keen eyed members may have noticed that there appears to have been a board played on Thursday 22nd May where the contracts played do not appear realistic when looking at cards as shown in the hand records. The results for Board 11 do not match the cards as shown.
Having examined the board I can see that the cards for the North and East hands have been swapped, so that East has a long Spade suit and N/S an 8 card Heart fit. It is possible that a glitch in the dealing machine resulted in the cards being placed in the wrong slots but when sitting out, should a partnership look at the boards they are not playing, it is vital that they are returned to the correct hands. This is especially important if the board has already been played at some tables.
However it would appear that this evening the cards were transposed before the board had been played and all three tables played identical deals, which although not matching the hand records means that the comparisons and scores can stand.
