National Handicap Pairs Championship, Sunday 7 September, 11am on BBO

National Handicap Pairs Championship

Sunday 7 September 11 a.m. BBO. Results are based on scores handicapped by NGS grade

Tyler Hill Bridge Club are hosting a heat of the National Handicap Pairs Championship on BBO on Sunday 7 September at 11 a.m.  It will be played as a single extended session, about 30 boards across all participating venues in the country. This event will be open to all of our club members and EBU members who do not have access to a nearby online session .Handicaps will be based on the average NGS of the two players in each pair, so all players will need to have their NGS visible. To do well you simply have to play better than expected based on your NGS - anyone can win this event just by having a sufficiently good day!

The charge will be $8 to cover the costs of the EBU and our director

The results from the heats are combined and matchpointed across-the-field, as if it were a Simultaneous Pairs event – and the combined scores appear on the EBU Sims webpage. The handicap for each pair is their average of the two players’ NGS grades.  The NGS grades are the grades before the event.  The handicap is relative to 50%, so can be positive or negative. The handicapped score is calculated by subtracting the handicap from the score from the combined results.

Handicapped-Score = Score – ((NGS_1 + NGS_2)/2 – 50)

Master Points

Blue Points will be awarded to the top 1/3 of the overall field at National rate and prizes will be awarded based on the overall handicapped ranking list. NGS grading for this event will be based on the underlying local results.

Dean Heather

We are sad to report that Dean Heather passed away on the 20th August at the age of 94.

Dean was a regular player in the bridge club before Covid and was very elegant, always fashionably dressed and lovely to play against.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Kay Burgess

We are very sad to report that Kay passed away last weekend, following a long illness which she knew would be terminal but never let that deter her “joie de vivre”

Kay was very entertaining company at the bridge table, always welcoming and willing to partner newcomers. Roger Newham recalls how he first met Kay at WCC social club in the 1980s, but they only became regular bridge partners when their paths crossed again at KBC in 2023. Kay loved playing bridge, had a competitive spirit but never took the game TOO seriously! Some of us will remember Kay for her stylish dress and distinctive jewellery, as well as her wry sense of humour. She was also a keen walker.

We will miss her
