5 Card Majors
5 Card Majors

For all our members who have already switched or are considering moving to 5 Card Majors and 2 over 1 Game Forcing, this book by Neil Rosen is perhaps the closest to the systems taught at Manchester Bridge Club.

It is easy to read, structured and offers many quizzes and examples to test your understanding. Highly recommended!!
If you would like a copy the ISBN is 978 108 915 4877

Charity Cream Tea Tuesday 9th September 1.15
Charity Cream Tea Tuesday 9th September 1.15

On Tuesday 9th September at 1.15 pm our usual Tuesday afternoon duplicate  will now include a Cream Tea ( that's scones with cream and jam - applied  in whatever order you prefer !) .  As in previous years all the table money , which is £10 pp , will be donated to charity and this year it will be for "Save the Children" - a charity supported by Dorothy Bailey, a Club Member ,  who sadly passed away recently.

If you are coming please sign up below so that we can buy in enough scones. Last year we had 16 tables and we hope for a good turnout this year.    .

Nicholas Greer's Summer School 2025
Nicholas Greer's Summer School 2025

Nicholas has now finished a very successful Summer School - thanks first to Nicholas but also to all the members (and non members) who attended these seminars and made them so enjoyable.

Nicholas covered a wide range of topics - requested by the Wednesday morning players - and topics included Trial Bids, Michaels Cue Bids, Unusual Two No Trump, Landy and Using the evidence from Bidding and Opening Lead to plan your play

During the Autumn we will be running a special duplicate on the 4th Wednesday morning in each month.  These duplicates should help you practice everything you have learned during the Summer Seminars.  The duplicate will contain a number of hands each month will relate to a topic covered by Nicholas over the summer. Nicholas will be providing superversion for these duplicates and we will provide hand records and an analysis for each of the 'special' hands at the end.  All are welcome to attend these duplicates which will start at 10.30am and last to around 12.30pm.

The first of these duplicates will take place on Wednesday morning 24th September 2025.

Beginners Bridge Taster Courses.

We are running two beginners bridge courses starting this September.  There is an evening course which starts at 7.15pm on Monday 15th September and a day time course starting on Thursday 18th September at 10.30am

If you are interested in joining one of these courses please complete the online form below.

Please be careful when you enter your email address. You will always receive a personal response in 24 hours.

Each course will last 10 weeks and covers the basics of play and bidding. We teach the 5 card major, strong No Trump and short club system.  We will also cover basic defensive tactics.

Most importantly, the classes will be friendly and sociable. Bridge can be a complicated game and will stretch your mind, but we aim to make bridge fun to learn and hope you will quickly come to love the game as much as we do.  Once your course is finished we have a wide range of supported, follow on sessions for you to join to continue to learn this wonderful game.

The course will cost £80 payable in advance which will include membership of our club until the end of December 25

Interested?  Find out more by emailing Susan on grasan30@gmail.com or completing the online form below

Online Account for Online Games
Online Account for Online Games

Please be aware that the BridgeWebs attendance Module is not a real time system. It reflects entry fees spent on online and face-to-face games but does not reflect money paid into your online account until it is manually updated from the Club's bank statement. Our 'WebMaster', Dave Fernley performs these updates periodically- usually weekly. If you need to know your balance between updates, call Paul or Dave.

The new Bridgewebs Attendance Module for tracking payment money for online games is now live.

It provides you with a real-time view of the games you have played, the current balance of your account and payments made and received by your account.

To see this information you will need to log on to the Members Only area of the website and then select thePayments Account tab.
Detailed instructions logging onto this area are available here

A detailed description of the Online Account, how it works, etc, is also available here within the Members Only Area (log-on needed).

Account statements will also be sent out periodically by email. This ensures that people who choose not to actively monitor their account balance are still aware of it. The statement provides a regular update to non-members who play in our online games who do not have access the member's area and therefore the real time benefits of this system.

Committee Members and Helpers Arrangements

We are really pleased at how many of you have taken on voluntary responsibilities with the club after our AGM call for help earlier this year.

We are grateful for the help with setting up refreshments, clearing up after sessions, opening and closing etc.

Sometimes, when a member takes on more onerous tasks there is a lack of clarity around whether they should pay for the session they are attending.  We discussed this at our last committee meeting because we realised there were slightly different arrangements in place at different times, and we wanted to have consistent arrangements at all sessions.

The committee agreed that all players should pay for any session they attend even if they set up the movement or have been involved in creating boards for the seminar, photocopying notes, bringing in supplies etc.

For instance, the committee member/helper pays the normal fee on a Monday afternoon, Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday evening even though they set up the movement, sort out the boards etc because they will then play with their normal partner during the duplicate.

A committee member organising a seminar will pay when they attend one of the seminars.

The exceptions when a member does not have to pay the normal fee are:

  • If they are a host. For instance, the host on a Wednesday evening  often has to go home as they are not needed, or the helper on a Thursday evening who sets up the movement and directs but only plays if someone doesn’t have a partner
  • when they are giving a lesson and running the session
  • when they help at a supervised session (generally for newer players/improvers) and only play if required to make up numbers
  • anyone teaching or supporting learners at our beginners’ courses
