  ♥  Club Statistics Update 27th July 2025 ♥

The number of ACTIVE clubs in the database has risen to 868
The TOTAL number of clubs, including Dormant and Defunct, in the database has risen to 1044.
The number of club sessions analysed on all 868 is 1,893. (A slight increase)
ONE club previously was found to have closed,, however, a new club, clearly linked to the old had been opened.

24 clubs were added or revisited during the last fortnight. Most of them were reviewed well over a year ago.

This has now reached the level where it seems reasonable to estimate the number of player sessions, playing duplicate, in all clubs in the database every week.

It's around 51,000. There is a small uptick.

There is a slow, but steady, rise in table money.

The detail captures day of week, time of day and the average number of tables in the last three sessions.

Dormant and defunct clubs are forming a big section (3% and 14%), they are excluded from data about active clubs.

Newly discovered defunct and dormant clubs are being included in the database as they come to light to try and assess the long term impact of Covid.
However, they are excluded from activity statistics.

My estimate would be that 25% of clubs that were active pre-covid have folded. Smaller weekly clubs were hardest hit.

Introducing the Token

Ever mindful of the move towards a cashless society we would like to introduce the Token system of payment which will run concurrently with cash payments. Hopefully this will help with your problem of finding change for Bridge and our problem of having to deal with too many large notes. The idea is that you buy 4 (£10)  or  8 (£20) tokens at a time and then use them to pay for your next few sessions, keep them handy in your bag or the car. Each token is worth £2.50 and can be used for 1 session of play on either Monday or Friday. The tokens can be bought for cash or for transactions of £20 or more the Treasurer has agreed to accept bacs transfer provided that the transfer is accompanied by an immediate email informing her of the payment.

Please note that cash is still perfectly acceptable but please try not to pay for one session with a £20 note or you may find your change is wooden discs

Gentle Duplicate Sessions

We are pleased to announce that our new Gentle Duplicate sessions, started in August 2024, have been successful and we are currently welcoming between 24 and 30 players.
These are EBU sessions with NGS and Master Points awarded, and, as such, no advice can be given during the hands. However, discussion is encouraged after play. The idea is to improve our game through sharing ideas and talking through what went well and how we could have done better.
These sessions will be for approximately 18 boards and as a rough guide, are best suited to players with NGS 9 or below.
We are aiming to have a host for each session, please check the calendar to see if there is a host or not. Come along and give it a try. You will be very welcome.

Aylesham

Opens (New Venue)

Thanks

A special mention to say thank you to Ann and David Melville who worked tirelessly to make The Aylsham and North Walsham Bridge Circle the success it was. We aim to continue in the same spirit, welcoming new, less experienced players, providing a relaxed and friendly club.

Aylesham and North Walsham

Closes

A big thank you from Ann & Dave for the lovely card and gifts.

We have enjoyed playing Bridge in Aylsham for more than

forty years. Please continue to enjoy playing.

Important Announcement

It is with great regret that after 38 years of bridge the Committee have reluctantly decided that with numbers dropping over a long period the club is no longer viable. The club closed at the end of 2024.

English Bridge School

Welcome to the EBS Supported Relaxed Duplicate Pairs

We have ceased operation of our supervised weekly game on BBO

After more than 3 years of operation,  the trustees and management of English Bridge Education & Development have decided to immediatley cease operation of our weekly EBS relaxed pairs session on BBO

As a charity organisation we have a duty to ensure that our staff are deployed to maximise their impact on the bridge world.

Unfortunately,  the number of attendees at our weekly game does not jsutify the amount of time that we spend preparing and running the sessions.

Clive and I have really enjoyed supervising these games and getting to know many of you through our Zoom meetings.

However, the time has come to say Goodbye.  We'll be in touch soon with suuggestions for how to access similar online bridge sessions.

Best Wishes

Mark Humphris ( Mark@ebedcio.org.uk) and Clive Turner

Thurlstone

It is with huge regret that Thurlestone Bridge Club is closing until further notice due to lack of support.

The Club has been going since 1984 but since covid and with aging members, it has meant that few have been attending.

WEST OXFORDSHIRE BRIDGE CLUB

Bridgenorth

Bridgnorth Bridge Club

Unfortunately, due to lack of support, Bridgnorth Bridge Club is no longer running.

10cc

The Club is full and there is currently no space for new members. Existing students going through our foundation course may have the opportunity to become members after the completion of the Foundation Course of lessons. We do not operate any form of waiting list for bridge players looking to join the Club. We would, however, expect to run another set of beginner lessons starting in the Autumn of 2025.
