Minutes of the last AGM and Matters Arising
The minutes were accepted. There were no matters arising.
Chairman’s report
There continues to be concern about the low number of members. Over the year the average number of tables was 4.5 and lately we are lucky to get 5. This situation was discussed with various suggestions but no real resolution. David and Ann Milne are teaching bridge learners in the hopes of increasing the numbers of potential club members. Attempts to resolve dissatisfaction with the venue (by sampling other local bridge rooms) resulted in the decision to remain at the ESSC. It was generally agreed that the room is less cold than last year and other venues could not improve on cost of hire, size of room and storage of equipment.
Treasurer’s report
The closing balance for 2024 is £1,023.54. The recommendation to suspend the club membership fee of £10 for 2025 was put to the vote and passed unanimously. Chris Evans was thanked for auditing the accounts.
Playing Captain’s report and presentation of prizes
Prizes winners were:
- The Pairs Championship rose bowl was won by Alan Wagg and Alan Thomas, with David and Ann Milne in second place, and Giovanni Nasti and Joe Pemberton in third place.
- The winner of the Individual prize for the best average when playing with a person who is not their partner – the Perfect Partner – is Giovanni Nasti
- The player with the highest total of match points is Chris Evans.
- The player with most slams (a grand slam counting as 3) is Aubrey Welterveden.
Election of Officers
There was a vote of thanks for Alan Thomas who was retiring as Chaiman but retaining many of his vital contributions to the club. David Milne was nominated for Chairman by Alan Thomas and seconded by Margaret Pascoe. His election was agreed unanimously. All other officers agreed to continue.
Host System
The chairman pointed out to members that, with fewer members, host duties are more frequent. Discussion about the pros and cons of the host system ensued and it was agreed to continue with it for the time being.
AOB
Should the club advertise its existence? It should be unnecessary as all bridge clubs can be found via Google or Bridgewebs.
