above provides a list of bridge books.

Our Bridge Library has been updated
Our Bridge Library has been updated

Thanks to our generous donors, the Club, over the years, has been able to build a comprehensive collection of over a hundred bridge books on a variety of topics, past and present. The reorganization of the Library is complete and it  is now located on the Book Cart in the back room. Please remember to sign out any book you're taking.

Waiver of Liability
During the Covid crisis, our Club, like many, had a serious revenue shortage that threatened its very existence. We were able to withstand those extensive losses due to two main factors, first, previous Boards had wisely reserved a ‘rainy day’ contingency fund that allowed us to continue to pay our bills and second, we made serious financial cuts to our operating budget, including Director fees and the Manager’s salary, in order to survive the lean months.

Previously, when we had a strong, steady revenue stream, the Club carried extensive insurance to protect all its volunteers, Directors, teachers and the Club Manager from any personal liability, that might arise in the course of carrying out their duties. The insurance cost over $2,000 a year, significant for a small club. At the fall ‘22 AGM it was proposed and accepted by the Membership that this insurance be cancelled as a financial saving. It was agreed that the actual risks of sustaining personal injury from playing bridge were minimal and that we all could, as responsible adults, accept those risks collectively and individually. It was also decided to include a waiver of responsibility, to protect our staff and volunteers, in the conditions of Membership to reflect the lack of insurance coverage. All present members will be asked to sign the waiver and any new members will be asked to sign on joining. Should any member be unwilling to agree to such a waiver and wish to rescind their membership please notify us of this choice and we will refund their membership fees.

Our new Waiver of Liability form is attached. Please take the time  to read it carefully.

The Longest Day-Monday June 23rd
The Longest Day-Monday June 23rd

Well the weather outside hasn’t improved but the bridge club is warm and welcoming.

After our wonderful, self-congratulatory Milestones event on May 26, we’re moving on to celebrate the ACBL Longest Day event in support of the
Alzheimer’s Society on Monday June 23. This is an ACBL-sponsored event held in clubs throughout North America, and we are proud to continue
supporting this worthy charity as we have done every year since our inception. We all know a family or family member who has been affected by this terrible disease and we are all concerned about the health of ourselves and our family in the future. All funds raised go to support the Newfoundland and Labrador Alzheimer Society so our money stays in our community.

We have a few exciting things lined up for this special day. First, we’re going to run two sessions, a special Supervised Play at 9:30 am, followed by our regular Open Pairs game in the afternoon at 1:00 pm. So either sign up for both, or plan to stay late/come early depending on your choice of game. Bring your own lunch, and let’s socialize over the lunch hour! Coffee, tea and sweets (homemade by some renowned bakers!) will be provided.

To make things even more interesting, prizes will be on offer during both morning and afternoon games and we invite members to donate consumable prizes or services. Homemade cakes, jams or pickles, flowers from your garden, a catered meal, a bridge weekend at your second home, a bridge lunch at your home, mentoring lessons, a gift certificate ... let your imagination run wild! Prize donations can be brought to any game prior to or on the 23rd. If anyone has a specific prize or service they would like to offer and wonders about the best way of handling it (an auction, perhaps), please contact Pat O’Brien at longestday@bridgeontheedge.ca and we’ll figure it out!

Cash donations (cheque or credit card) by individual BOTE members have always been a backbone of our fund-raising efforts. (A representative of the  Alzheimer Society has normally joined us over the lunch hour to accept and receipt cheques, but that won’t be possible this year owing to our Longest Day event falling on a long weekend.) Donations can be made online (referencing BOTE in the Comments section) or by mail, or a cheque given to a member of the Longest Day committee any day prior to the start of a game. Envelopes for donations will be available. Please consider the importance of the work done by the Alzheimer Society and the role the disease plays in the lives of friends and family, and give generously.

In addition, we will be running 50/50 draws, always popular with our membership, from June 2 through June 23. So bring a few extra dollars for a worthy cause, and plan to win!

Purple is the official colour of the Alzheimer Society so we invite you to show your support by wearing purple on the 23rd. Let’s see how purple we can be!

Donations support research and our programs and services. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated.
How to get my donations recognized for BOTE?
When making an online donation please indicate “In support of BOTE” in the “Additional Comments” section. This allows the Society to easily identify those donations coming from the BOTE membership and to allocate them accordingly. Otherwise, the donation will not be included in the BOTE total.
Will I get a Tax Receipt?
Receipts will be issued for donations over $10. If you submit a donation online, a receipt will be emailed to you, normally within two weeks. If you haven’t received a receipt within three to four weeks, please contact the Society by email (events@alzheimernl.ca) or phone (709-576-0608).
For donations submitted by mail, a receipt will be mailed to you. Please ensure that you provide your name and address. Note that there may be mailing delays before the Society receives your donation and you receive your receipt. But rest assured a receipt will be issued.
For donations given to a member of the Longest Day Committee, a receipt will also be mailed to you. Be sure to include your name and address either inside or on the outside of the envelope.

Annual Milestones Event

All club members are invited to attend our annual Milestones Celebration on Monday May 26th from noon to 1:00pm. During the past year we have had several club members achieve significant Milestones in their bridge journeys and we will celebrate these accomplishments.  Brian Shortall will MC the event and lunch time food will be served.  Everyone is welcome, however we ask that you please sign up on the website for the event by Friday May 23rd so we can order enough food. This is our Academy Awards event so please feel free to dress accordingly.  Our regular Open Pairs event will follow the celebration.

Other Games

There will also be Club Championship games on May 19th, with IMP scoring,  May 22nd and May 26th with MP scoring. These games award above average points to those that achieve greatness, it could be you.  Our regular Open Games, Duplicate Light and Supervised play will continue throughout May, our last Supervised Play session for the summer will be held June 2nd.

Our Wednesday trial game didn’t work out so well so that game is canceled until further notice.

Thanks for your support and please sign up for Milestones if you’re planning to come.

See you at the club!
