Aylesbury Grand Slam Duplicate Bridge Competition |
|
|
Hand of the Week 23rd June |
Show Detail |
Richard and I played Board 19 quite early in the evening. Our contract was 4H, reached, as you might expect, by 2NT-3D-3H-4H and we made the easy 12 tricks. I reflected at the time that someone might find the slam although, on just 26 points, it needs a leap of faith, especially from North. South has stated his hand with the opening 2NT bid and cannot reasonably be expected to take further action unilaterally. With a minimum 20 points, he cannot even super-accept the transfer despite the excellent hearts. So it comes down to how much North values his 7 card suit. If he’s feeling lucky, I guess the only way is good ol’ Blackers which will show three aces or, indeed, all four missing “aces” if using key card. One problem the experts might encounter is that 2NT-2D-3H-4NT would be quantitative, not Blackwood, showing 5 hearts and a borderline invitation to slam which, South, with a minimum, should decline, signing off in 5H. I recommend the Texas Transfer (look it up) where 2NT-4D would be transfer to hearts and a subsequent 4NT an unambiguous Blackwood in Hearts. Aren’t gadgets wonderful?! Anyway, two pairs found this lovely slam, by whatever means, so well done to Kathy/Janet and Andrew/Elizabeth

FREE ONLINE INFORMAL TEAMS |
Wednesday 2nd July. Please contact David for seats.
Log in to BBO by 7:10pm and wait in the Lobby
Please do not wander off into other areas as you may become invisible to the organiser.
Please check and accept the invitation to play as soon as possible. Multiple invitations may be issued if someone does not accept in time.
Play will usually start around 7:15pm, but may be earlier if everyone is ready.
Explaining bids
If you do not understand an opponent's bid, or want further explanation, simply click on the bid. They will receive a pop-up box, where they can explain what their bid means. This is not visible to their partner, only to you and your partner (so no additional information is passed between them).
If you are asked to explain your bid, please do so promptly using the pop-up box, not in the table chat (as the chat can be seen by all players).
Online play with BBO uses Self-alerting
Before you bid, if your bid is not a natural bid, enter the meaning of your bid in the message box, and click the alert button.
This is not visible to your partner (who should already know what your bid means), only the opponents.
Using Undos
During bidding, if you genuinely mis-click a bid, you can immediately request an undo, which should normally be granted by your opponents.
Undos are not normally allowed during card play, so be careful when playing.
Chris has started an automated email notification service for updates to this section - the service runs from 7am to 10:55pm - if you would like to subscribe, please email Chris
