Kiran Nadar is Formidable

SORRY, PARTNER is a hit podcast about bridge (the card game) and the worldwide community of bridge players.

In this episode, we revisit our conversation with Indian champion Kiran Nadar. Kiran talks to us about representing India at bridge tournaments around the world, and the interplay between that and her roles as a philanthropist and museum founder. Plus she shares her top tip for developing players.

EBU Nine-High Corwen Competition

For All NGS Players Rated  2  up to  9

Message from Chris Bickerdike (Cornwall County Bridge Association)

In an ongoing effort to encourage lower ranked players to play more competitive duplicate, in Spring 2025 the EBU is organising a new national pairs event for players with an NGS of nine or less. It is called the Nine-High Corwen (the annual national pairs for all ranked players being called the Corwen), and Cornwall can enter a maximum of three pairs into the final which will be played online, on either BBO or RealBridge, depending on each pair's preferred platform.

The Competition runs from 1st January to 30th April 2025 with the Final on 31st May 2025.

For more information, go to the Nine-High Corwen page on the EBU Website.

To Bid or Not to Bid?

Let Sleeping Bids Lie?

Is it better for South to pass...
...or open in ♣ and be overcalled in ?

Taken from a hand played at St Ives Bridge Club.

How would you bid as South?

Possible Answers...

This hand has 5 possible calls, any one of which could have been correct!

  1. Pass: The Rule of Fifteen suggests adding HCP to the number of Spades. Less than 15 Pass (too easy for the opponents to overcall in Spades and outbid you)
  2. 1 Club: you have 13 HCP and a good suit, is any game possible??
  3. 3 Clubs: you have 7 Spades and partner will assume you have more than 10 HCP
  4. 4 Clubs: Probably keeps the opponents out! You may well make it, you have 8 tricks if they lead Hearts so only need a couple from partner
  5. 3NT: Gambling with a solid minor and lack of stops in the other suits. Partner bids 4 Clubs if they can’t stop the suits and if they are void in Clubs or Diamonds. Usually you will be able to work out partner’s suit

If you open 1 Club and the bidding goes as it did at our table:

West North East South
Pass Pass Pass 1♣
1  1♠  2  3 ?

This is an extension of the Gambling 3NT: "Partner I have a solid minor (Clubs!) and if you can stop Diamonds bid 3NT.  Otherwise bid 4 Clubs".

So two ways of getting to 4 Clubs which is the making contract and Pass would not be the top score.

West North East South
Pass Pass Pass ?

Bridge Tip of the Month

Bridge Etiquette: "One No Trump" and Responses

When your partner opens "One No Trump", or "Two No Trumps" you MUST tell the opponents the HCP range of the bid.

Don’t say "Weak" nor say "Strong" as there are different numbers around (13-15 for instance)

You don’t need to announce an overcall of 1NT

***

If partner bids Stayman 2♣  over 1NT or Stayman 3♣  over 2NT you announce "Stayman"

If partner makes a transfer bid (2 to 2 or  2  to 2♠  or 2♠  for a minor) you can say:

"Transfer to …" or you may just say the suit

***

So: 1NT, 2H

Say "Transfer to Spades"

or just

"Spades"
