Last of the SCCBA Late-Summer Events!

The always hotly-contested SCCBA Ladies Pairs Championship will take place at Patcham on Sunday 19th October.  It's a two-session event that starts at 1pm and finishes at around 6 pm.  The entry fee includes a plated tea.  This event may be entered here.  If you have any questions, please email Joy Mayall or ring her on 07715 104985.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Blue-Pointed Midweek Swiss Pairs

Congratulations to Chris Jepson and Neil Watts who were the comprehensive victors at the Midweek Swiss Pairs on August 27th.  They who won all but one of their matches.  In second place were Liz Hoskins and Peter Clinch who also won five matches out of six but finished 19 victory points behind the winners.  Peter Rowell and Francis Kelly had a storming finish to take third place.  Andy Osborn and Peter Griffin were in fourth place and also won the jack-high prize.

Many thanks to Stephen Kennedy for excellent directing, to Charlotte Setahul for a delicious lunch, to Martin Pool for dealing the boards and to Peter Bates for going above and beyond in a variety of roles.

Kent/Sussex Green-Pointed venture on the weekend of October 25th-26th

As in recent years, there'll be a Swiss Pairs on the Saturday and a Swiss Teams on the Sunday (see summary).  We hope that this will again be a friendly affair and attract players of all standards (green points are a bonus!).  It will again be held at Tunbridge Wells Bridge Club - a lovely facility and just next door to a Premier Inn if you want to make a weekend of it.  You can enter here.

Events for less-experienced players in November

In November, less-experienced players will get a chance to sample county bridge in a variety of events in different parts of the county:

• On the following day, Sunday November 16th, in the West of the county, there's the Worthing Welcome Pairs.  This competition is for those with an NGS (National Grading Scheme) rating of 5 or below with the field also divided into 3 separate fields for differing levels of experience (maximum of 5 years) when it comes to prize-giving.

• And, at the end of the month, on Sunday November 30th in the East of the county, there's the inaugural Eastbourne Venture Pairs.  Less-experienced players (NGS rating of 6 or below) will be able to play with more-experienced partners if they choose.

To encourage beginners, there'll be restrictions on which conventions can be used.  And all three venues have a record of supplying delicious refreshments so why not come along and try one or more of these events?

Jim Bugden

It is with great sadness that we report that Jim, a long-standing member of the Association, passed away on 28 July, after several years of poor health.  Jim was Honorary Auditor for the Association's accounts from 2002 to 2015 and his then-employers, Baker Tilly Accountants, through Jim's good offices, sponsored our playing cards in the early days of using duplimated boards.  Jim was a very fine and courteous player, a true gentleman of the game.  Our thoughts and condolences go to his widow, Sally, at this time.

The funeral will be on on Monday 1st September at 1.30 pm at St Paul's Catholic Church, Hazelgrove Road, Haywards Heath, RH16 3PQ.

Worthing Venture Pairs

We had 22 pairs for what was a lovely day of bridge on Sunday July 20th which was enjoyed by all.  A delicious afternoon tea was provided by the ladies from Worthing.
